U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Japan's and Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the removal of 45 kg of HEU that was used in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA).

In March 2022, the United States and Japan removed HEU from three research facilities in Japan.

UPDATE: In December 2025, NNSA and the Kyoto University announced the conversion of two cores of the KUCA facility to HALEU.
