On 21 October 2104 Ukraine began construction work at the site of the centralized spent fuel storage facility. The facility, which will receive spent fuel of the Rovno, Khmelnitsky, and South Ukraine plants, is being built at the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Ukrainian authorities expect that the storage site will open in 2017. When completed, it will be able to store 16,530 spent fuel assemblies (12,010 VVER-1000 and 4520 VVER-440).
The contact to built the facility was signed in 2008, but the start of construction has been delayed by the lengthy approval process. The approval to start the construction was received only in September 2014.
