Further delay for India's breeder reactor

India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor is facing another delay. Shrikumar Banerjee, Chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission, was quoted as saying that the reactor would be commissioned in 2012-2013. In February 2010 India announced that the construction would not be completed in December 2010 as previously planned, delaying the expected completion date by a year. Even a month ago, officials were saying that the PFBR "will be completed by the end of 2011 or during the first quarter of 2012." A number of recent news reports (e.g. 1, 2) routinely describe the PFBR as projected to cost Rs. 56 billion, which represents a 60 percent increase on the initial projection of Rs. 35 billion.
