Russia to supply HEU fuel for French research reactor

Russian State Corporation Rosatom and France's Commissariat a l'energie atomique (CEA) reached an agreement under which Rosatom will supply HEU fuel for the Jules Horowitz Reactor that is being constructed at the CEA Cadarache Center. The research reactor is designed to use high-density U-Mo LEU fuel, but pending fuel development it will operate using uranium-silicide fuel with 27% HEU. The reactor is expected to begin operations in 2014.

In the past, Russia supplied 620 kg of HEU for research reactor fuel to France under an agreement that was signed in 1996. These shipments were completed in 2004. The terms of the new agreement are unknown at this point.
