Russia begins decommissioning of the military reprocessing plant in Zheleznogorsk

As part of the Federal Program on Nuclear and Radiological Security, Rosatom began preparations for the decommissioning of the Radiochemical Plant of the Mining and Chemical Combine in Zheleznogorsk. The plant, which became operational in 1964, was constructed in the mountain. It was reprocessing "irradiated standard uranium blocks" of the Zheleznogorsk plutonium production reactors. The last of these reactors, ADE-2, was shut down in April 2010. The reprocessing facility operated until 2012. The removal of all irradiated fuel of plutonium production reactors was completed in 2017.
