On November 30, 2015 President Cristina Fernandez of Argentina took part in a ceremony that appears to mark the beginning of operations at the Pilcaniyeu enrichment plant. The start of operations, in fact, was announced earlier, in February 2015, but it is possible that the plant was operating in test mode since then. The work on restarting the facility began in 2010.
The initial capacity of the plant, built in the late 1970s and shut down in 1996, was 20,000 SWU/year. The current project calls for increasing the capacity to as much as 3 million SWU/year.
