European countries formally set up a consortium that will build a demonstration lead-cooled fast reactor, known as the Advanced Lead Fast Reactor European Demonstrator (Alfred). The 300 MWth reactor will be built in Mioveni, near Pitesti in southern Romania. According to World Nuclear News, construction is expected to begin in 2017 and the unit could start operating in 2025.
Development of the reactor is part of the EU Lead-cooled European Advanced Demonstration Reactor (LEADER) project initiated in 2010.
