High-level waste shipments from Sellafield to Japan continue
According to a report by World Nuclear News, a shipment of high-level waste left Sellafield on August 2, 2011 to Barrow-in-Furness, where it is to be loaded aboard the Pacific Grebe, one of the ships built to transport nuclear waste. The shipment was reported to include 76 canisters with high-level waste. This is the second commercial HLW shipment from Sellafield to Japan. The first one, which consisted of 28 canisters, took place in January-March 2010. The U.K. HLW removal program is expected to complete the shipment of the total of 1,850 canisters of foreign waste held at Sellafield to Japan, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands by 2020.
