U.K. opens storage facility at Sellafield

The United Kingdom completed construction of the Sellafield Product and Residues Store (SPRS) - a facility that will store U.K. nuclear materials, primarily plutonium that has been separated from spent reactor fuel. The facility, which could accommodate up to 100 tonnes of plutonium, would allow the United Kingdom to store the material for about hundred years. The U.K. has already accumulated about 80 tonnes of separated plutonium, most of it civilian. It also does not have a clear strategy for disposition of the material.
