According to Tom Clements of the Friends of the Earth, DoE has not yet made a decision about the spent fuel currently stored at the Savannah Rives Site and the Idaho National Lab. He writes that "at SRS, the fuel is being stored in the spent fuel pool of the closed L-Reactor. While SRS is preparing to reprocess the spent fuel in the H-Canyon, no final decision has been made about disposition of the fuel by the Office of Environmental Management in DOE headquarters. DOE is preparing a Supplement Analysis (to the earlier EIS) and at some point will issue an Amended Record of Decision on the fate of the fuel. (This decision is tied to the decision under consideration of processing of 5 MT of dirty plutonium - for vitrification at SRS or to WIPP. See Feb. 2010 DOE presentation: Surplus Plutonium and Spent Nuclear Fuels Disposition)." 

According to the Friends of the Earth's estimates, "reprocessing may produce a substantial income for SRS (around $250 million/year)." However, the concern is that "reprocessing has proliferation implications and will yield more liquid waste to go into the already-strained HLW tanks. Direct storage of the fuel in a dry cask facility may well be a viable option and DOE is looking into that. The swap between INL and SRS of spent fuel is on hold until a decision is made on the fate of the spent fuel."
