Russia starts IBR-2 reactor after modernization

On July 5, 2011, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia restarted its IBR-2 research reactor after a modernization program that began in December 2006. The modernization will allow the reactor to operate until 2035. The reactor, also designated IBR-2M, is a pulse reactor that uses plutonium fuel.
