MURR reactor to be converted to LEU fuel

The research reactor at the Missouri University will be converted to LEU fuel. The Maneater, the university student newspaper, quotes the MU spokesman as saying that conversion may take up to three years. The LEU fuel for the reactor is being developed at the Idaho National Laboratory.

MURR is one of the two U.S. research reactors that still use HEU fuel (the other one is MITR at MIT). The conversion program is currently managed by the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI). In September 2009, GTRI completed conversion of two U.S. reactors in September 2009.
