Argentina reopens its Pilcaniyeu uranium enrichment plant

On October 25, 2010 Argentina reopened its Pilcaniyeu uranium enrichment facility, which was closed down in the 1990s. The president of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez, took part in the ceremony. In her address she said that the plant is expected to produce its first low-enriched uranium in 2011. The president underscored government's commitment to peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The Pilcaniyeu Technology Complex is located in the Rio Negro province of Argentina. It hosts a gaseous diffusion enrichment  plant that was built in the late 1970s and shut down in 1996. The plant is currently under IAEA safeguards.
